The course starts with a practical overview of the UK accounting system. Trainees are introduced to HMRC, Companies House, the public company register, and the difference between Limited Companies, LLPs, Sole Traders and Partnerships. This is based on the original training module’s UK Account Overview section, which includes HMRC, Companies House and UK entity types.
The accounting section covers the adjustment entries that a UK accounting associate is likely to encounter. These include depreciation, amortization, prepayments, accrued income, accruals, deferred income, debit notes, credit notes, payroll journals, hire purchase basics, mileage, personal expenses paid by directors, dividends, share capital, and director loan account treatment.
The Excel section develops working-paper discipline. It covers cell referencing, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, text and date functions, SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, SUBTOTAL, pivot tables, conditional formatting, selection shortcuts and formatting shortcuts. These topics are drawn from the Excel module in the attached training plan.
The communication section focuses on short, clear and structured client communication. Learners practise email drafting, query writing, routine client communication, listening and confirmation of understanding. This is aligned with the English and Soft Skills module in the original document.
Trainees will complete a Companies House search, read a filed account summary, solve a mixed journal-entry worksheet, build a Director Control Account in Excel, prepare a small reconciliation schedule, and draft five client emails based on routine UK accounting scenarios.
Assessment will include one accounting journal test, one Excel schedule test, one Companies House research task, and one client email/query drafting exercise.
Build the foundation required before a trainee starts VAT, payroll, Xero and year-end work.
This course introduces the UK accounting environment, basic entity types, HMRC, Companies House, core accounting concepts, adjustment journals, Excel working papers and professional communication. It also ensures trainees have the minimum technical and communication discipline required before moving into process-heavy UK accounting work.
By the end of this course, the learner should be able to explain the basic UK accounting ecosystem, search for a UK company on Companies House, understand common UK entity types, pass basic journal entries, prepare simple accounting schedules in Excel, and draft clear accounting queries and client emails.
The programme is delivered in hybrid mode.
Minimum qualification: Undergraduate degree.
Note: Students who are in the final year of an undergraduate programme are eligible to apply.
